10 Albums You Loved As A Teen (But Should Never Listen To Again)

5. Dookie (Green Day)

Green Day Dookie
Reprise

Released: 1994.

Why You Shouldn't Listen: There will be those going red-faced with anger at the inclusion of this pop-punk classic from the mid-90s. It's Green Day's magnum opus, according to some, and it birthed hit tunes like 'Basket Case', 'Welcome To Paradise' and 'When I Come Around'.

The problem is that they all sound so basic next to the band's later efforts.

'Warning', as a whole, is a much better album, and so is the ambitious 'American Idiot'. Some will argue that 'Dookie' was better because of it's unpolished production, but that's elitist nonsense. The fact is that Green Day's sound and Billie Joe Armstrong's voice benefitted from more sheen and producers who could layer their songs.

Should you revisit this one, prepare to find some nice jangly pop-punkers, and a whole load of tracks that pass by without much excitement or incident. Of the near 40 minutes on-disc, only around 12 hold up as essential today.
