10 Amazing Hidden Tracks On Classic Albums
4. Iron Gland - Alice in Chains
The entire journey leading up to Alice in Chains' Dirt felt like a slow slipway into Hell. From one song to the next, Layne Staley is clearly not doing well, completely consumed by his addictions and writing songs that feel like you're trudging through mud and constantly being pulled down towards the underworld. For all of the songs about drugs and death though, the darkest sounding song on here is actually the one that was included as a goof.
During a break from the sessions, the band went out to Joshua Tree to cool out with Tom Araya from Slayer, who provides the vocals on Iron Gland. Stemming from a snippet of a riff that Jerry Cantrell used to annoy the rest of the guys with, the band agreed to have it included on the album as an interlude track under the condition that Jerry never played it again.
Though the song may not have been a favorite for anyone else in the band, this might be the darkest bit of ambience that the band would ever write, almost starting off like a tribute to Black Sabbath's Iron Man before everything starts going haywire towards the end and being consumed by noise at the very end of the track. With Angry Chair being up next in the track listing, listening to this feels like the freefall before you finally land in your drug-induced Hell.
