3. Vapor Trails - Rush
There was a pretty good chance that Rush was going to end shortly after they got through their Test For Echo tour at the end of the '90s. While the band themselves were still on good terms, Neil Peart found himself more and more lost in his personal life, losing his daughter after a tragic car accident and his wife passing away shortly afterwards from cancer. It was going to take a long time to heal, but Rush came back as a new band on Vapor Trails.
From the start of One Little Victory, Neil was ready to come back into the fold properly, as if the time between albums had been only a few days. Compared to the earlier records that Rush had put out though, you can hear Neil getting more thoughtful with his lyrics, having songs that were about getting away from his problems and trying to find a way to be happy in your own skin on songs like the title track or How It Is.
Although the loudness wars definitely shot this album in the foot upon release, both Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee sound great as well, taking out every last bit of the synths they had started with back in the '80s and making a no BS rock record for a solid hour. While there was some apprehension when they first took to the road, even Neil was ready to begin his new era with Rush, saying that it would have been a shame if that never happened again coming off of his first sold out show.
