10 Amazing Noughties Albums No One Ever Talks About

7. Be Your Own Pet - Self-Titled

With an average age of just 18 when their self-titled debut was released, Nashville's Be Your Own Pet certainly weren't short of attention, with famous fans including Thurston Moore and The Kills. But their career was short lived; they disbanded after just five years. Out of the two albums they released, this and 2008's Get Awkward, this one was significantly better, but has been somewhat eclipsed by the controversy of the second release. Get Awkward made headlines when three tracks were deemed too violent for American audiences and subsequently banned from the album. Be Your Own Pet is a refreshing piece of work. It's unpretentious, perfectly under-produced and Jemina Pearl's unique howl is somehow charming. If you're a fan of gentle, poetic indie, give this one a miss. But if you like fun, childish punk and enjoy songs about adventures and zombies, there are few albums (or bands, for that matter) that do it better than this lot.
