10 Amazing Rock Albums We Never Got To Hear
1. 1984 Opera - David Bowie
Every David Bowie album has always tended to have some baggage to unpack along with it. Given the amount of detail he put into his work, each respective entry in the Thin White Duke's catalog has had either some overarching concept or a deliberate tone shift across its runtime. Though there were plenty of rock stars that Bowie took inspiration from, we could have actually been given Ziggy Stardust's second interpolation of science fiction.
Coming off of Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, Bowie wanted to cut a new album inspired by the dystopian book 1984. While Bowie had always been fascinated with the masterpiece by George Orwell, the author's widow wasn't terribly comfortable with the rights to his work being used outside of the original context. Instead of going with the initial concept, Bowie eventually just jumped back into the glam rock pool on Diamond Dogs...with a twist.
Regardless of his conceptual work falling through the cracks, Bowie did end up including a few of the skeletons of songs he had on the record, with the titular 1984 being a keyboard driven affair and Big Brother perfectly encapsulating the oppressive nature of the dystopian society in question. Despite the best of intentions, these little table scraps are probably the last we're going to see of the Starman's unique vision.
