10 Amazing Rock Albums We Never Got To Hear
6. Reznor Vulgaris - Queens of the Stone Age
The entire Queens of the Stone Age sound has always been grounded upon something that is not quite right. From Rated R to Lullabies to Paralyze, each song has an oddly mechanical nature to it that feels both evil, sensual, and twisted all at the same time. Given that Joshua Homme has called this kind of music robot rock for years now, it's a crime that we didn't actually get an industrial giant behind the mixing board.
Going into recording for the Queens' 5th album Era Vulgaris, Homme was originally slated to work with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails as a producer. Compared to the other big name producers, this was the stuff that music legends are made of, with Homme and Reznor each being sonic masterminds in their own right. On the other hand, records often come down to being at the right place at the right time as well.
With Queens gearing up to make the record ASAP and Reznor tied up in commitments to his previous act, Homme elected to just make the record himself with the help of Chris Goss. Regardless of Reznor's non-presence, we did get to hear little bits and pieces of what that could have sounded like, from the one-off collaboration on the title track to the dark atmosphere laced all throughout Sick Sick Sick. Even though QOTSA albums are almost always a star studded affair, the idea of Reznor bringing his signature snarl into the mix is something that needs to be explored further.
