10 Amazing Rock Bands That Almost Had The Wrong Members
9. Kurt Cobain - The Melvins
Most of the '90s nostalgia has been very kind to almost everything that Kurt Cobain touched. From the moment that he got famous, it seemed like every band that he loved somehow found their way to the major labels, with the Butthole Surfers and the Meat Puppets getting the call from the higher ups when Kurt talked about them in interviews. For a split second though, it looked like even Kurt's band might not have happened if he hadn't failed an audition.
When Kurt was first starting off in the grunge scene, he was absolutely obsessed with the Melvins, going to many of their shows and picking up their albums. Once the word came out that they needed a guitarist though, Kurt was in line with a bunch of other Seattle hopefuls trying to snag a spot alongside Buzz Osbourne. And while Buzz did take a liking to Kurt at first, the kind of guitar playing he used just didn't gel with the more dissonant sounds of what the band was known for.
Time seemed to work out just how it should though, with Kurt becoming one of the most iconic frontmen of the '90s after Nevermind broke through. He never forgot where he came from though, and Kurt made a point to produce some of the Melvins' later material once he hit it big. Hell, if he didn't like the sound of Nevermind, he could at least express himself by helping out his favorite band.
