10 Amazing Rock Songs Not Sung By The Lead Singer

2. Homecoming - Green Day

It's never an easy decision when a band has to start over from scratch. During the initial sessions that Green Day were making for their follow up to Warning, misplacing the master tapes made them rethink just what kind of music they wanted to make at the time. Since Billie Joe Armstrong was dealing with community service in between recording though, Mike Dirnt found a way forward through humor.

Showing up to the studio by himself, Mike decided to fool around with this little piece of a tune called Nobody Likes You, which made everyone laugh when they came back into the studio. Almost trying to one up each other on who could write the best 30 second song, Billie started to take it a little bit more seriously, eventually putting them all together into one magical song that made the skeleton for Homecoming.

Though the rest of American Idiot had yet to be fleshed out, most of Homecoming remained exactly how it was, with every member of the band getting their moment to shine. While Billie still gets the main melody line for most of the song, Mike's Nobody Likes You keeps things rolling along right before Tre Cool takes over for Rock and Roll Girlfriend until they finally bring it back home to Mike at the very end. So just be careful with whatever you create. This might have been a joke at first, but there was some magic in between those comedic jabs.
