10 Amazing Rock Songs That Artists Hated Recording

1. The Unforgiven - Metallica

For everyone calling Metallica sell outs for going in a more radio friendly direction on the Black Album, you can't say they weren't committed to the idea. As the years went on, you could feel that the thrash titans needed a change of pace and were willing to go the extra mile with producer Bob Rock to get the sound they wanted. The only problem was that some members of the group had to suffer a lot more than others.

Much like James Hetfield put a lot of time and effort into making Nothing Else Matters, Bob Rock was convinced that Kirk Hammett needed to go the extra mile for the guitar solo to The Unforgiven. Being unimpressed with every single take that Kirk played up until that point, Rock started to get more and more hostile towards Kirk in the studio, riling him up and calling all of the more complex solos he did closer to warm ups.

By the time that recording was wrapping up, Kirk was at the end of his rope, getting more and more frustrated to the point where he just played one random take through just for the hell of it. As it turned out, that anger was just what he needed, turning into the basis of what the solo would sound like on the final version of the song. It might not have been the healthiest of studio practices, but Kirk still stands by this being one of the greatest solos that he has ever played.
