10 Amazing Rock Songs That Divided Bands
1. Amsterdam - Van Halen
The '90s were never known to be that kind to the age of classic rock and roll. Though you had people like Aerosmith scoring hits at the time with power ballads, Van Halen were at a low point, with Balance being received pretty poorly across the board. There were some kickass songs on here like Amsterdam though, but that song does come with a bit of an asterisk next to it.
After Eddie and Sammy Hagar started clashing in the studio, their ability to compromise really hit a wall with this song. Although the structure of the tune is fairly enjoyable, the lyrics always hit a sour note with Eddie, as Sammy sings about going over to Amsterdam and how much he loves smoking weed when he's over there. Yeah, considering both Eddie and Alex were originally from the Netherlands, that kind of stereotypical song topic was not doing Hagar any favors.
They did end up going through with it though, and Eddie has said that he always hated the results in the years since its release. Given that the rest of the album cycle wasn't much better, this was the writing on the wall for the end of the Sam Halen era, with Hagar eventually leaving and the band hiring Gary Cherone for the next album. There is definitely a good song buried in here somewhere...it's just a shame that the lyrics had to take a major nosedive in the studio.
