10 Amazing Rock Songs That Divided Bands

2. Free Fallin - Tom Petty

Just the idea of Tom Petty making a solo record feels wrong, doesn't it? Ever since he first burst onto the scene with the Heartbreakers, he always seemed like the one calling the shots and wrote nearly all of the material, so why would he need another outlet for that? The Heartbreakers do have their opinions though, and sometimes things could get a little heated when it came to the new songs he was writing.

Since Full Moon Fever was being made with just Tom, Mike Campbell, and ELO's Jeff Lynne as producer, the rest of the Heartbreakers were treated as sidemen, only being brought in to play a few songs here and there. When bassist Howie Epstein turned up one day though, he was having a terrible time and admitted to Tom that he didn't like the song that he was being asked to play on before leaving on the spot.

What he was complaining about turned into Free Fallin, which became one of the biggest hits that Tom had ever had and put the Heartbreakers back on top again when they took to the road. That only gave another headache to Epstein though, having to play the song night after night after not really being that jazzed about it in the first place. Because if you thought the song wasn't that great the first time, imagine what it sounds like the 100th time. Even if the song might not click with you, the paychecks might soothe the pain a little bit.
