10 Amazing Rock Songs That Divided Bands

3. Revolution 9 - The Beatles

One of the biggest rules with the Beatles was that everything worked as a democracy. If there was an idea that one of the Fab Four thought wasn't that great, it would usually get scrapped and they would think of something better to put out in the meantime. Since there was no real cohesion to the White Album though, John Lennon's sound collage of Revolution 9 fit right in, and pissed off Paul McCartney in the process.

Being more of a sonic experiment than an actual song, Revolution 9 feels like it should be reserved for some of the experimental albums that John had been working on with Yoko Ono at the time. It's not like it was misguided or anything either, with George Harrison suggesting some ideas and actually helping in the recording process for the song. When they were deciding on what to include though, Paul fought tooth and nail to leave the song off the album, thinking that it would be better suited to another project.

It's not like Paul was averse to the avant garde style of music either, getting into the scene all the way back in the mid '60s before the rest of the band had heard about it. This was where he had to draw the line though, and this began the kind of creative tension that would lead to the greatest songwriting partnership in rock fracturing in two.
