10 Amazing Rock Songs That Got Banned
5. Imagine - John Lennon
The entire world seemed to be a little bit wounded after the effects of 9/11. Although there had been many terrorist attacks both before and after 2001, there was nothing that had this kind of magnitude at the time, with the city of New York looking like a ghost town for a while with people fearing the worst for the rest of their families. It would take the US a little while to recover, but the radio station bans started to get absolutely ridiculous.
In the wake of the tragedy, Clear Channel eventually came out with a list of songs that they thought were too controversial to play during this period of mourning, with a shockingly high amount of rock and roll on the list. Though fans may have understood why something like It's the End of the World by R.E.M. got banned, it's insane to think that John Lennon's Imagine even qualifies for a list like this.
Because Imagine, a song that John Lennon about one day seeing a world where we can all live as one united human race, is the song that is much too taboo to play during a time where all of us needed some peace. Rock and roll was always about pushing against the norm though, and some radio stations fought back, playing every single song that was on the censored list at the time. Music might bring up some bad memories, but songs like these are what help most of us heal our wounds as well.
