10 Amazing Songs By Terrible Artists
2. Higher - Creed
Yes...you all can get your yarl memes out of the way right now. For all of the greatness that has come from Alter Bridge over the years, it's practically a miracle that we got that music from the same guys who formed the basis of Creed. Although Scott Stapp's vocal range is definitely an acquired taste, there was at least a few tracks worth seeking out on their early records.
Though Human Clay is the same record that gave us the musical punching bag With Arms Wide Open, Higher is one of the few Creed songs that actually seems to have some power behind it. Being in a major key (a rarity for a rock song like this), Mark Tremonti actually has some pretty amazing licks sprinkled in between the verses. Tremonti always felt stifled on most of their hits anyway, so this is just the kind of fretwork that we were waiting for.
As much as Stapp could be called the liability of the group, his voice is not nearly as overly dramatic as usual, sounding more like a guy who just listened to a bit too much Eddie Vedder back in high school. But if you want to just put aside the rockstar BS to actually write a song, we're going to be the last ones to complain about it.
