10 Amazing Songs By Terrible Artists
1. Slow Dancing in a Burning Room - John Mayer
We've all had a John Mayer in our life in one form or another. No matter what kind of social gathering that you find yourself in, there's always going to be that one schmoozer with a guitar who's going to try to get in good with the ladies by playing Wonderwall for the thousandth time. While all of these guys were practicing their pickup lines though, John Mayer actually grew the hell up into an actual musician.
Across the record Continuum, Mayer actually put his chops to good use and created a pop album that relies more on the players rather than the fluff. Although most of the record holds up today, Slow Dancing in the Burning Room feels like those sappy ballads of his early days, only refined with a fine toothed comb.
For all of its melodramatic undercurrents, Mayer actually manages to put a lot of tasteful guitar work into the mix, almost doing what someone like John Frusciante would do if he was asked to write a hit song. You can even hear hints of Jimi Hendrix in his presentation, looking to play the role of the drifter with a guitar moving from one town to the next. It's still the same dorm room rock of before, but this is the kind of stuff that brings up the good memories from college.
