10 Amazing Songs That Artists Hate
5. Better Man - Pearl Jam
As the grunge explosion started to reach its apex, Eddie Vedder became more and more distraught with his own celebrity. After Pearl Jam's massive album Ten launched them into the stratosphere, Vedder's sudden clash with fame made him rethink every other move he made, starting with refusing to make videos and shunning most interviewers. However, you do have to compromise in some places, and Better Man became Vedder's poptastic albatross.
Going into their third album Vitalogy, Vedder wanted to make something much more artsy that only the die hard fans of the band could really appreciate. While you could argue that something like Bugs and Pry To are definitely interesting, that vision started going south when producer Brendan O'Brien heard the demo of Better Man. With O'Brien insisting it be on the album, Vedder had to swallow his pride and cut a version of the song, after which it exploded on rock radio.
Considering Vedder wanted to minimize his own spotlight in the public eye, this certainly didn't help matters, with Better Man quickly turning into one of the biggest songs the band had ever had. However, Eddie has seemed to come around on the tune, being more than happy to let the crowd sing along to the chorus instead of him during live shows. While the experiment to downplay himself didn't work, it's actually a fair trade when you get one of the greatest singalongs of the '90s out of the deal.
