10 Amazing Songs That Never Made It Onto A Studio Album
4. I Disappear - Metallica
Half the reason why people slag off Lars Ulrich so much is because of what he did with Napster in the '00s. For all of the sloppy performances that he has done in recent years, seeing him go after music piracy was definitely not the best PR move he could have made, making the rest of Metallica look like nothing but a bunch of money hungry metal gods looking for a quick paycheck. If you actually listened to the song they were defending though, you can understand why the guys would want a piece of it.
Recorded for the second installment in the Mission Impossible franchise, I Disappear holds a strange place in Metallica's catalog. Even though it's not the most complex song in the world, hearing them dabble with more modern textures is actually a breath of fresh air, sounding much more energized than half of the stuff off of Load and having a certain swagger to it that they were never really able to capture in the past few years.
While it could benefit from a better solo here and there, all of those imperfections seem to really work here, like the harmonics on the guitars hitting at just the right time to the snare being not quite as tight as it should be. If the sound design of this was a teaser for what was to come on St. Anger, fans would have been much kinder to that record if we had gotten more songs like this.
