10 Amazing Songs That Never Made It Onto A Studio Album
2. Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles
As insane as it sounds, there were a few months in the mid '60s where it looked like the Beatles were actually past their prime. Since they were given a little while to rest and gave up the touring life completely, other bands like the Monkees were coming up in their place, as music journalists argued that the band was getting too passe. They may not be playing one concert after another anymore, but John Lennon was on the verge of a breakthrough when he returned to Abbey Road Studios.
Originally conceiving Strawberry Fields Forever as a folk song, what happened when it was brought into the studio was one of the first examples of progressive music, taking the sounds of everything they could think of and putting it into one package. While the basis of the folk song is still here, the entire recording seems to go through different movements, from the sounds of the Mellotron that open up the tune to the foreboding orchestra that comes in on the second chorus.
Since this was written about John Lennon's childhood hideaway a short walk away from his house, the different sounds on this song almost give you the feeling of stepping back in time, being both nostalgic and a little bit spooked about where things are going to go next. The moptop days of the Fab Four may be a thing of the past, but the next few years of them working as studio entities were about to give us some of the greatest music that the rock world had ever known.
