10 Amazing Songs That Were Never Performed Live
4. Hey Hey What Can I Do - Led Zeppelin
As far as the classic artists are concerned, Led Zeppelin's discography is pretty much airtight. Although albums like Presence and In Through the Out Door certainly have a more scattered tone than their predecessors, there aren't too many places where the masters of hard rock slipped up all that often. Even if their third self-titled release is a little bit rougher than what had come before, the B-side Hey Hey What Can I Do deserved a much better fate.
Given the amount of acoustic musings they were doing on the record proper, this was the logical follow up to stuff like Tangerine and Friends, only to be thrown on the back half of Immigrant Song without too many second thoughts. Even when taking to the stage, you'd never find this on Zeppelin's setlist, instead opting to go for the more dramatic cuts like Going to California or Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. Then again, this song is actually a lot weirder than you might realize.
Compared to the kind of folksy bent most of their previous acoustic material had taken, this is probably the closest the guys have come to writing a country song, albeit through their blues belter vignettes. While there are thousands of Zeppelin cuts you should probably hear before this, Hey Hey What Can I Do is a fun-as-hell tune that doesn't deserve to be hung out to dry like this.
