10 Amazing Songs That Will Make You Love Britpop
6. Sandstorm - Cast
In the story of Britpop, John Power just seems like a man that was around just a few years too early. After having to go through the La's with Lee Mavers, his turn in Cast already gave him a level of street cred in the Britpop community before he had even played a note of music. While Lee was the mastermind behind Power's first outfit, he was certainly no slouch on his own on a track like Sandstorm.
Being one of the main singles on their first record All Change, this is a bit of an outlier, having a much sharper attack that feels almost punky, along with Power's rough Scouse accent bleeding through every word he sings. Compared to what he would eventually get up to in songs like History, this is a bit of a no BS approach to songwriting, taking stacked chords and just building a coherent song out of it by going from one note to the next.
Across every single measure, the key keeps continually changing, sounding happy at one instance and then reverting back into the minor key version of things when the time calls for it. While it might seem a bit amateur to just build a song like this from the ground up, it takes a true workman's touch to fit all of this music together and make it feel effortless. Whether or not he even knew he was doing it, John Power was onto something brilliant.
