10 Amazing Songs Written Out Of Competition

5. Digital Bath - Deftones

The sessions for Deftones' White Pony was something much darker than most people realize. With the title being taken from a euphemism for narcotics, most of the storylines painted by Chino Moreno on this record are a lot darker than you'd find on other nu metal releases, from the ethereal Change to the pure anger on Passenger. However, the album's biggest hit was actually written after a few writing sessions between Moreno and Stephen Carpenter.

On this album, Moreno's choice to play guitar didn't really sit well with Carpenter, whose riffs were a big part of their sound in the early days. As Moreno started to play catch-up, he found himself trying to beat Carpenter at his own game, often times with amazing results. Though Carpenter's initial ideas for heaviness resulted in stuff like Elite, Moreno's riff turned into the makings of what would be Digital Bath.

With just two chords, the entire riff puts you in a strange sort of haze, as Moreno tells this twisted fantasy of a man killing his lover in the bath tub. Despite the morbid subject matter, this became one of the standout tracks on White Pony, which catapulted Deftones into the upper echelon of rock acts at the turn of the '00s. Even though Chino still comes and goes behind the six-string, his initial attempts did yield some magic.
