10 Amazing Stories Behind Famous Rock Album Music Covers

2. Beans Beans, (Not) Good For Your Heart (The Who Sell Out - The Who)

For their third studio album in 1967, British rock monoliths The Who decided to embrace their commercial nature and call the record "The Who Sell Out".

This was meant as a joke, as they'd already been doing adverts for years, but that's not the point.

To commemorate their transition into the world of capitalism, the band opted for some good old-fashioned product placement on the front of the album's cover. The two images side by side that make up the artwork are of Pete Townshend with a giant stick of Odorono deodorant and Roger Daltrey in a bath full of Heinz baked beans.

Unfortunately for Roger, those beans nearly killed him.

Because so much of the musical fruit was needed to fill the tub, the beans had to be transported whilst frozen. This meant that they were very cold when Daltrey was sitting in them, giving him either the flu or pneumonia depending on who you believe.

Thankfully, the legendary singer did not succumb to any bean-based disease and the story of his exploits has now passed into legend. He would never look at a full English breakfast the same way ever again.
