10 Amazing Things You Didn't Know About Gerard Way

6. He Wrote An Issue Of Spider-Man

As a long-time comic fan, Way (who has written his own comic book series, the incredible Eisner-winnning Umbrella Academy) must have felt amazing when he was asked to write an issue of Edge Of Spider-Verse, a mini-series centred around revisiting various incarnations of the wall-crawler.

Of course, Way's incarnation was absolutely fascinating. Speaking to Rolling Stone, he said:
"It was thrilling! I just took the basic concepts of Spider-Man and then I looked deeper into it. I thought about the radioactive spider: "What if it was more than just a bite? What if a bite was a psychic link and the spider stayed part of the story?" That brought up a little girl who loses her dad. Then I drew the spider suit. And then right away I drew Daredevil, because I thought to myself, if I'm only getting going to get to write one Marvel comic, I'm going to put Daredevil in it as well."
Way's story takes place in a futuristic city, with Spider-Man arriving in the form of a government experiment known as SP//dr. The premise of SP//dr is that it's made up of three parts: a machine, someone within the machine and a radioactive spider that acts as a symbiote between the components. This experiment is lead by Uncle Ben and Aunt May, who realise the only person they can successfully pair with the machine and the spider is their adopted child Peni. If that sounds bonkers, well...it is. But it's totally unique, too. How could it not pique your curiosity?
