10 Artists Who Grew Out Of Their Appeal

5. Avril Lavigne

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NPBIwQyPWE When she arrived in a puff of teenage angst, trendy ties and eyeliner, Avril Lavigne was considered a breath of fresh air by some, if a phony by others. As she expressed her frustrations with poseur boyfriends and wailed about being stood up on a bridge in the dark, teens and pre-teens everywhere - largely female - saw a kindred spirit. Avril may now being nearing thirty, but she has held on to her rebellious teen image, with her attire still on the safer side of alternative and her music retaining that juvenile disquiet. Whilst some may sneer at her for this, there is one thing that separates her from others on this list: she's actually still pretty damn good at those things. Although the hype may have died down a long time ago, Avril has managed to remain relevant and commercially successful, maintaining her allure as the poster girl for teenage angst. Her music has seen natural maturity, of course, and there have been one or two disasters - see 'Girlfriend' - but love or hate her music, Avril deserves to be commended for still managing to make this work.
