10 Artists That Changed Music Genres (And Everyone Hated It)
3. Rebirth - Lil Wayne
There had been the ongoing conversation for years that rap and rock to mix all that well. Even when you had acts like Rage Against the Machine stretching the definition of what rap and rock could be together, the stench of nu metal was a bit too much for people to take all that seriously, with acts like Limp Bizkit making the whole genre feel a lot more embarrassing for everyone involved. Rap and rock comingling was pretty much dead, but apparently no one gave Wheezy the memo on Rebirth.
Coming right after his impressive streak with the Carter saga, hearing Lil Wayne go in a rock direction is one of the most baffling creative moves of the 2010's, as he straps on his guitar and tries his best to deliver the kind of heartbroken rock that was gaining traction around this time. Although having different samples from rock and roll songs have worked well in the past, Wayne is clearly an amateur based on the first few tracks alone, as he uses his guitar almost as a prop and drenches nearly every single line in Auto-tune to cover himself up.
The sins of this album weren't just limited to the track listing either, with endless memes made by guitarists these days showing Wayne's attempt to play some of these songs live with a guitar around his chest. All artists should be allowed to take risks every now and again, but you also need to make sure you know what you're getting yourself into before you start.
