10 Artists That Destroyed Their Own Album

7. Load - Metallica

After The Black Album was released, it felt like Metallica were on an unstoppable crash coarse of metal mastery. Since they managed to shock the world by holding onto their credibility while still writing accessible material, it felt like you could only go up from here. Though we learned to cool our expectations for Load, it didn't help that we had one of the worst singles they could have asked for to kick everything off.

That's not to say that there's anything wrong with the song King Nothing, with it exhibiting all the trademark groovy tones that we'd come to expect from this era of Metallica. Then again, there's something almost a little too familiar about the song, especially considering the phrasing of the notes feels indebted to their last big hit. And then it dawns on you: this is basically just Enter Sandman only with different lyrics to it.

It's not even funny either, with the song being primarily written by Kirk Hammett and having the same kind of verse chorus structure of starting menacing before exploding into the chorus. As much as the overuse of ballads on here signaled a change in Metallica's sound, there's a case to be made for this song alone being the warning sign. Capped off with the "off to never never land" tagline, metal fans were now right to be worried.
