10 Artists That Destroyed Their Own Album
6. Adore - Smashing Pumpkins
The Smashing Pumpkins are the '90s representation of what happens when you hit the ceiling too fast. As far as alt rock goes, these guys were meant to be the cool companion piece to grunge, with albums like Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness setting them apart enough from their contemporaries from Seattle. Then Billy Corgan made a synth rock album and everything went to hell.
Though that seems harsh at this point, it's hard to really argue when that's exactly what Billy was going for. Seeing how the pure bombast of Mellon Collie set them on the path to being one of the legendary bands of the '90s, Adore was made intentionally to mess with fans' heads, with songs that felt like they had more to do with the sounds of New Order or Depeche Mode than the radio ready rock that we were used to at the time.
While songs like the sorta title track Ava Adore managed to fare decently well on the charts, the lukewarm reception coming out of the gate pretty much cemented this record as a dud before it even found its way onto the shelves. Though not necessarily hitting a wall, this was the long slow descent that most Pumpkins fans were wishing would never come.
