10 Artists That Ended Their Career With One Album
5. Blink-182 - Blink-182
As the pop punk wave continued to rise at the turn of the century, Blink-182 were turning into one of the biggest bands in the world. After Green Day and Weezer blew the doors wide open in the mid ‘90s, albums like Enema of the State introduced us to these California brats in full force, with songs that had to do with teenage angst and trying to find your place in the world. It may have been a nonstop party onstage, but Tom DeLonge was starting to lose the plot going into the next album.
Looking to branch out into different styles with Box Car Racer, Tom came through with a new approach for Blink’s self titled record, feeling more akin to straight up alternative rock than the traditional pop punk tropes. While this was definitely a change of pace for people who wanted a sequel to The Rock Show, the new styles ended up going over surprisingly well, like their flirtations with ‘80s aesthetics on songs like Always and I Miss You and even bringing in Robert Smith from the Cure to lend vocals to the song All of This.
The actual songs may have come together perfectly, but it ended up being at the expense of the band’s chemistry, as everyone failed to get on the same page during the tour and ending with Tom DeLonge saying that he was leaving the band via email. It would be years later that the original lineup came together after Travis Barker’s horrific plane crash, but for an entire generation of kids, the pop punk glory days ended right here.
