10 Artists That Ended Their Career With One Album
4. Overexposed - Maroon 5
In their beginnings in the early ‘00s, Maroon 5 felt like the definition of what pop rock could stand for. Even though songs like She Will Be Loved were nowhere near heavy or anything, you can still tell that they had chops as a rock band. They started to drift into some unchartered waters in the next few years though, and Overexposed was the moment where their rock days were finally over.
As much as Adam Levine may like to brand himself as a rock star these days, this record is one of the most feeble attempts at them to go pop, with tracks that feel like they’re just trying to rip off different artists at every turn. While songs like Moves Like Jagger may have been seen as treasonous back in the day, having some of Maroon 5’s rock fanbase hear this might make their head explode.
Whereas their initial run gave us some breezy songs like Sunday Morning and Makes Me Wonder, hearing something like Daylight just feels wrong coming from them, almost sounding like Levine is trying to make his song sound like Coldplay. There are even a few songs that seem like they’re on the verge of something great like Love Somebody, only to be coated in traditional pop sounds and waste the potential that Adam still has with his voice. The band have still continued to release records for years after this, but the Maroon 5 that we knew died years ago. This is now the Adam Levine Experience and don’t you forget that.
