10 Artists That Hate Their Own Albums
8. Let Me Up (I've Had Enough) - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
For most of the '80s, there was nothing that would stand in between Tom Petty and his need to make rock and roll songs. After already going through a massive lawsuit to get control of his publishing, he had kept on delivering just the right kind of heartland rock to merge into the '80s, from the synthesizers of You Got Lucky to the soundscapes in Don't Come Around Here No More. Once the tour for Southern Accents came to a close though, Tom felt much more adrift for his next record.
Going through his main discography, Tom had talked about how he was going through a frustrating time getting this record together, and you can really hear it when you see these songs paired together with different synthesizer parts that feel a touch dated. For all of the more forgettable aspects of the record, some of Tom's best songs of the '80s turn up on here as well like the folksy It'll All Work Out or when he gets more introspective about a relationship falling apart on Runaway Trains.
Seeing how Tom was a few months away from recording his first solo album Full Moon Fever, you can tell that he wanted to break free from the confines of the band on this project. If you listen past the internal drama though, this is the sound of a gritty rock and roll band just cutting loose in the studio.
