10 Artists Who Always Had The Best Music Videos

6. The Cure

Notable Mentions: Boys Don't Cry, Lullaby, Lovesong, Friday I'm In Love, Close To Me, Just Like Heaven

The Cure have always been unique - not just for their music, but for their gothic imagery, especially when it comes to the appearance of frontman and constant member Robert Smith. The man has both excited and spooked audiences alike over the years with his darkened looks, and The Cure's music videos were the perfect platform to show off Smith's black locks and vampiric makeup in all it's glory.

The band decided early on this was the direction they were going down, and videos such as 'Boys Don't Cry' and 'Lovesong' through the 80s all featured dark and disturbing settings. Many were shot with very dark lighting, with the singer almost acting his lyrics in a disturbed fashion from the shadows, dark caverns and derelict rooms. The most popular example of this is 'Lullaby' - the smothering themes of the song are represented with Smith in a bed, spending four minutes getting tied up in a web and eaten by a giant spider. It's the stuff of nightmares, but it allows the uniqueness of The Cure's music to shine through.

You never see Smith onstage anymore without his signature look, and that's down to the success of these warped, yet emotionally charged, videos. It's musical art in its purest form.
