10 Artists Who Never Managed To Top Their First Album

2. Cyndi Lauper

At the time of her 1985 Grammy award winner for Best New Artist, Cyndi Lauper was one of the biggest stars in the world. Her appropriately titled debut She's So Unusual spawned two gigantic smash hits in Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Time After Time which were both also nominated for numerous awards. It was the first female debut to have four singles become top five chart hits. Lauper was one of the first artists to embrace the power of MTV and speak to that generation of fans - all over the upstart channel in its early years as one of their flagship artists. Lauper's career saw the release of ten studio albums, but with the exception of her second release True Colors (bolstered by the strength of the title track), never quite took off and she eventually saw her relevance fade. In 2010 she released Memphis Blues, a Grammy-nominated foray into the world of traditional blues that was a vast departure from her bubblegum pop roots. She's had success writing for Broadway in recent years as well. To further illustrate the extent of her musical legacy she provided the soundtrack to many a childhood with her contribution to The Goonies, and was a large part of the success of the first WrestleMania thanks to her role in the Rock N' Wrestling Connection.
