10 Astounding Albums By Landfill Indie Bands Of The '00s

4. Friendly Fires - Friendly Fires

Moving again towards the dancier end of the spectrum comes Friendly Fires. Their band name is a comforting play on a more tragic act and that warmth comes through during the entire album. It boasts track after track of danceable, 80s and electronic influenced indie rock, and thankfully they were able to follow it up with their second album, Pala. The opening track, Jump in the Pool, is irresistibly catchy and welcoming, and despite being the best track, its excellence doesn't overshadow the proceeding tracks. It's followed by In the Hospital, and enthusiastically funky piece, it borrows the vocal hook from The Talking Head's Crosseyed and Painless. Strobe is a laid back dance track that relies on a reversed guitar loop and some relaxed synths. Lovesick makes another return to their funky side and matches it with an appropriately hooky chorus. The hooks are the key to this album, and it's never lacking in that department. A musically dense album, it's consistently catchy, colourful and fun. Definitely worth a listen for anyone who missed it the first time around.
