10 Awesome Albums Made Entirely Of Outtakes

4. Incesticide - Nirvana

Throughout most of Nirvana's career, Kurt Cobain always wanted to hold down a semblance of punk rock credibility. Even when the band hit upon alt rock perfection with Nevermind, Cobain never seemed to be satisfied with what he considered to be a polished version of his music.

At the same time, Incesticide shows a completely different side of the band which Cobain likened to new wave music. While songs like "Been a Son" and "Stain" don't seem to have the nervy energy of a band like the Talking Heads, they are still some of the most well-crafted rock tunes the band had ever written. The band also takes a few passes at more obscure cover songs like the Vaselines' "Son of a Gun" as well as an electric version of their own stellar acoustic cut "Polly."

That's not to say the punkish aggression doesn't show up here, with songs like "Aneurysm" and "Big Long Now" showing the more noise rock stylings that you wouldn't find on the band's more commercial output. This album became such a fan favorite that songs like "Sliver" became great stand-alone singles for the band. Even with Cobain deprecating his own work, the song scraps that Nirvana came out with were still mandatory listening for any alt rock fan.
