9. The Ballad Of Dwight Frye
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGnijAnlW0c An unlikely choice for a cover song from Alice Cooper, The Ballad of Dwight Frye is still a great way of showing how the band make material their own. The Melvins are one of those groups that simply own each cover song that they do; immersing themselves and making any changes they see fit - with this song of course being no different. You can't help but feel the emotions that are being let out during the verses and the power that erupts during the chorus only reinforces the intensity that they ooze, putting as much gusto into it as one of their own creations. Both grave and powerful, this track isn't bogged down by unnecessary guitar solos or anything else that would interfere with the core effect of the song. The band moulds it into their own masterpiece, soaking it in everything that is their sound as the song ebbs and flows. They manage to create an energy out of quiet music that few of their peers can even begin to match, which only makes it have that much more of an impact when the song really kicks in.
