10 Awesome Openings In Terrible Songs
2. I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor (Arctic Monkeys)
"Don't believe the hype?" said the Arctic Monkeys when recording the video for the band's breakout tune. Turns out they were probably right.
The Arctic Monkeys have come a long way since I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor but it is by no means down to the success of this one track. In fact, their early smash hit is probably one of their worst, more of a 5-pound British version of the smokey guitar sounds of The Strokes.
So what was is it about I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor that got the world to notice them? The intro of course! From the very first second, we are treated to a sound of scratchy guitars and teenage adolescence, not forgetting the thumping drumbeat that marked the welcome introduction to one of the most underrated drummer in the world, Matt Helders. It's an intro that lashes out at you from nowhere as if you're on a night out and everyone has just massively kicked off.
Annoyingly, the intro disappears as rapidly as it arrives, only to turn into a less satisfying version of a song that could have been something a bit more special.
It's cool though, they made it up with the equally amazing intro of A Certain Romance and the rest of the song that complimented it just as well.
