10 Awesome Rock Bands With Terrible Debut Albums
6. The Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Red Hot Chili Peppers
As time has gone on, The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been one of the most reliable acts in the rock scene. Even if not every song on their albums is a hit or anything, the band have carved out a certain style of music that provides some of the funkiest rock music that you could ask for. That's nothing new for the Chili Peppers though, and their self titled debut is them at their funkiest...almost to a fault.
Back in the days before John Frusciante or even Hillel Slovak, the Peppers' first record is some of the most off the wall funk they would ever create...and not necessarily in a good way. From the different rhymes that Anthony Kiedis spits to the amazing bass lines of Flea being just a little bit out of place, the sound of this album is a lot more chaotic than many of us are used to hearing the Chilis. This feels less like an album experience and more like a couple of frat bros getting together on the weekends to show their stuff.
Then again, you can at least see the seeds of what the band would become, along with a bit of tongue in cheek humor like covering Hank Williams' Why Don't You Love Me?. If you're in the mood for the genesis of funk rock that was happening around the late '80s, you should throw on some Faith No More before this any day of the week.
