10 Awesome Supergroups We Never Got To See

5. Red Hot Chili Peppers w/ Buckethead

Long before they even got big, it was impossible to judge who the core guitarist was for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Ever since starting to make waves on the Los Angeles club scene, both Anthony Kiedis and Flea were dropping six-stringers like flies, from Hillel Slovak dying of a drug overdose to Jack Sherman just not being the right fit with their unique brand of funk. Just when they seemed on steady ground with John Frusciante, fame took its toll just when they started to reach the top.

After getting more and more uncomfortable with the attention from the press, Frusciante quit the band halfway through the tour for Blood Sugar Sex Magik, leaving the Peppers without a guitarist for the umpteeth time in a row. While the original disastrous idea to place an ad for a guitarist in LA Weekly bottomed out, there was originally an idea to bring in a young kid named Brian Carroll into the fold.

Better known these days as Buckethead, the initial stages of auditioning never really worked out, with Dave Navarro being brought in to work on the next record One Hot Minute. For a band like the Chili Peppers who thrives on the more straightforward funky grooves, their more insane songs like Around the World later down the line would have been even more amazing with Buckethead's virtuosic soloing over it.
