10 Awesome Supergroups We Never Got To See

6. The Bluesy Beatles

The idea of replacing anybody in the Beatles feels sacrilegious in most music circles. Regardless of what some Pete Best defenders might have to say about the matter, the entire spirit of the Fab Four didn't really gel until John, Paul, George, and Ringo all came together to play onstage. When it came to the end of the Get Back project though, we came dangerously close to having another guitar god in the mix.

As the Let it Be film describes, tensions were mounting between each of the Fabs, leading to George Harrison storming out of the studio on one occasion, saying "see you round the clubs." Not wanting to be sidetracked, John Lennon's split second decision was that the group draft in Eric Clapton to finish the album if Harrison decided not to return. It's not like Lennon didn't have a point though.

At that point in their career, the Beatles' last go-around with the blues great was when he contributed the lead break to While My Guitar Gently Weeps, which got them out of their own funk. Clapton is quick to dismiss the idea though, knowing that he was nowhere near the level of songwriting to even attempt to compete with Lennon and McCartney. Now that both Lennon and Harrison have departed from this Earth, it's probably best to just leave the legacy where it is.
