10 Awesome Supergroups We Never Got To See

4. Who Zeppelin

When the Yardbirds began to dissolve at the end of the '60s, no one could have anticipated what Jimmy Page had in store. Originally thinking of making a new lineup of the Yardbirds, what would eventually become Led Zeppelin gave Jimmy free reign to make some of the punishing riffs that he knew how. Just before John Bonham entered the fold though, Page's original choice was a bit more ambitious.

Looking to steal him from the Who, Page actually approached Keith Moon to be the drummer for what was then supposed to be called the New Yardbirds, with John Paul Jones filling in on bass. It's not that hard to see why either, with both Moon and Bonham having fairly similar chaotic approaches to the kit, each of which relies heavily on the raw power of the way they hit the drums.

Considering the Yardbirds had dissolved at this point though, Moon had no real aspirations to leave his main gig, saying that the idea of him abandoning the Who would have gone over like a lead balloon. Turning the jab into gold, Page used Moon's critique to become the foundation of Led Zeppelin, picking up Bonham after getting a tip from Robert Plant. Since we got two insane skinsmen for the price of one though, it's safe to say that this iteration probably worked out for the best.
