10 Awesome Taylor Swift Songs That Aren't About Guys
7. The Lucky One
What It's About: How Fame Isn't All It's Cracked Up To Be Taylor strays from her usual first person narrative in The Lucky One to tell the story of an adored and celebrated superstar, who ran from the darker side of fame and sought a quiet life after becoming overwhelmed by her immense success. Interestingly enough, it has been speculated that this song is about 60s folk-pop legend, and Taylors long time idol, Joni Mitchell, due to lines such as new to town with a made up name (since Mitchells real name was Roberta Joan Anderson) and overnight you look like a sixties queen. Despite the song sounding somewhat remorseful of Mitchells escape from fame, Taylor notes that she understands it now possibly reflecting some of her own fears about the pressures of being famous under the eye of the public, constantly expected to uphold a perfect version of herself for the mainstream media. It is unclear whether Taylor wrote The Lucky One in order to express a desire to occasionally escape her own celebrity status, or maybe she simply wanted to honour her hero and appreciate the career she used to have. Either way, this song is a very personal and interesting cautionary tale that gives the listener an insight into the less glamorous underground of the music industry and the hardships that come with fame.
Lucie mostly enjoys long walks on the beach and short walks to the fridge, while dabbling in a little bit of writing here and there. The quickest way to her heart is probably through chocolate, laughing at her terrible jokes and sappy electronic music... but handing her a cheque for £1 million would probably work too.
