10 Band Members That Overshadowed The Singer

3. Tom Morello - Rage Against the Machine

When Rage Against the Machine first came onto the scene, you couldn't ignore them if you tried. Regardless of the alternative revolution that was making waves around the same time, the words coming out of Zack de la Rocha's mouth on every song made you feel like you could take on the world, leading a revolution to overthrow those corrupt with power. Then again, the one thing on everyone's mind was how the hell that guy was making all those strange noises with his guitar.

Straight from the first Rage record, Tom Morello almost felt like an anti guitar hero, taking different sounds that he found while practicing and turning them into glitchy electronic effects in their songs. While he did use a bunch of standard effects that we know today like octave pedals and delay, what he could do with just his amp really threw everyone for a loop, with riffs that were either just strange sounds or him playing with the feedback coming from his guitar.

As the nu metal boom started right underneath their feet, Tom was the substitute for a DJ in the band, filling the void for those kind of soundscapes that would normally be reserved for the turntables of the world. There were even explanations built into the liner notes of Rage's records, saying that every strange sound heard on there was indeed made with just guitar, bass, and drums. The messages behind these songs were already bulletproof, but it took Tom's guitar to make them sound massive.
