10 Band Members That Overshadowed The Singer
2. Slash - Guns N Roses
There's a difference between wanting to be a rock star and wanting to be a musician, and Slash seemed to know that from an early age. Even though he chased his rock and roll dreams throughout his teenage life, he was always the kid known for shredding on guitar and keeping his calm and cool demeanor whenever he was onstage. When Guns N Roses first broke onto the scene though, it almost felt like Axl Rose had some competition underneath that top hat.
Since GNR stomped the rest of the hair metal scene out of the water, Slash was the new guitar hero that everyone tried to copy, being much more down to earth than the shredders of the world. While you had guitarists who could play a mile a minute, Slash was always rooted in the classic players like Joe Perry and Eric Clapton, which you can hear every time he tears into a solo. The chorus might be great, but you're practically getting a completely different hook during every lead break, being just as singable as anything that Axl was crooning on the other side of the stage.
Decades have passed since Appetite for Destruction, and Slash still seems like the embodiment of cool for most guitar players, having just the right amount of swagger without having to say a word. He might not say much, but that's because he doesn't really need to. Because Slash is practically the modern outlaw of the rock world, and he's happy to just let the guitar do a lot of the talking for him.
