10 Band Members That Overshadowed The Singer
4. Pete Wentz - Fall Out Boy
There's no real way to quantify stage presence in a rock band. Even if you can play some of the catchiest riffs known to man, charisma is something you have or you don't, and it's usually what ends up deciding whether a band is going to be huge or not. And when you have a great singer at the helm without that much stage presence, you sometimes need someone from the back to step up.
As much as Fall Out Boy dominated the pop punk genre in the mid '00s, the camera always seemed to turn to Pete Wentz whenever it came time to shoot videos. And it makes sense, since Wentz was the one who wrote the majority of the lyrics at the time and Patrick Stump would be left to add his soulful voice over top of them. Even when Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley were playing their asses off, the lyrics are what always kept you engaged, being a lot more witty and conversational than some of the more whiny diary entries that we seemed to be getting at the time.
For all of the talent that these guys had, Pete was the one who helped keep the band in the public eye and made it seem like a spectacle when they finally got back together in the 2010's. That doesn't make him a better musician...it's just about group dynamics. Everyone has their place in Fall Out Boy, and Pete Wentz was always the real rock star behind the band.
