10 Bands That Became One Album Wonders
4. Lauryn Hill
Most hip hop heads in the '90s had a musical freak of nature on their hands with the Fugees. As much as gangsta rap had the record industry by the throat at the time, the smooth ventures into R&B taking place on albums like the Score made Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill household names off the strength of songs like Killing Me Softly. Once they splintered off though, Lauryn Hill was going to have one of the biggest solo ventures of all time...for a little while.
Arriving just a few years after splitting off with the Fugees, the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is one of the few perfect records of the late '90s, as she experiments with everything from rap to soul to even folk tinged moments. With the help of friends like Carlos Santana in places, this version of Lauryn sounded happy and hopeful for her future on this album, which was stomped into the ground in the years that followed.
Despite a live album taken from MTV Unplugged, there has been virtually nothing coming down the pipeline from Lauryn, instead falling into diva territory and cancelling shows to such an extent that it gives Axl Rose a run for his money. Then again, when you have this much talent suppressed into one album, there's no use in continuing on. Just one album....that's all you get from Ms. Hill.
