10 Bands That Became One Album Wonders

3. Hootie and the Blowfish

After the grunge wave faded, most people were wondering what the hell was going to be bubbling up from under to replace it. Since the entire Seattle scene hit the music world like a sledgehammer, what was next had to give it a run for its money in one form or another, right? In theory, yes...as long as you don't take into account the sheer force behind Hootie and the Blowfish.

In hindsight, it almost seems weird that these guys got popular at all, considering most of their schtick just seems to be a random bar band that just happened to get famous. Well, the gimmick here is that the songs were catchy as hell, with Hold My Hand and Let Her Cry making everyone across the country sing along with the warbly baritone of Darius Rucker.

Granted, when part of your gimmick is that you're kind of boring and uninteresting, you can't really blame people when they stop paying attention. Not deviating too far from their sound on Fairweather Johnson, a lot of their followup sunk like a stone on the charts, being relegated to the used CD rack within months of its release. As much as songs like Only Wanna Be With You might give you the nostalgia bug at karaoke, Cracked Rearview was probably plenty Hootie for most of the public to listen to.
