10 Bands That Broke Up After Their Debut Album

8. American Football

American Football is often regarded by many as one of the quintessential emo bands of the 20th & 21st century, with their smash hit 'Never Meant' looming on the playlist of every heartbroken, midwestern indie teenager longing for the love of their youth back. Though the band have recently reunited after 14 years away, their original stint lasted a short 3 years, producing one critically acclaimed debut album.

Following their formation in 1997, the band quickly released three songs on a 7" record and one EP, securing a record deal with Polyvinyl. Their debut, Self-Titled album released in 1999. The album gained minimal traction and received minor success locally, which led to the band's decision to solely become a studio project. This did not last long, with the band becoming inactive and then disbanding in 2000. Though the band's initial run was unsuccessful, the time they spent away from the band saw their debut receive a cult status, slowly becoming a sleeper hit with fans of the Math Rock and Emo genres through word of mouth.

American Football reformed in 2014, releasing a reissue of their Self-Titled debut and embarking on worldwide tours to support the album. The band have since released two more studio albums, receiving positive reviews and continuing to chart successfully. The band have expressed desire to continue the project full time, with no hints toward another break up.
