10 Bands That Deserve To Be More Than One Hit Wonders
7. Fountains of Wayne
The whole idea behind Fountains of Wayne even getting big in the first place almost seemed like a joke. From the first opening lines of the song Stacy's Mom, the track felt more like a joke on the typical power pop formula than what you were used to. Then again, sometimes things get a little too real once the joke starts to wear off.
Apart from their classic hit, Fountains of Wayne have kept the waves of stardom going as a decent pop rock act throughout most of their career. Not really fitting in with the edginess of pop punk in their day, a lot of their work in recent years seems more indebted to the likes of Cheap Trick and Big Star from the glory days of hooky choruses and AM radio.
Granted, it's not like they really had the best sense of style even when they were hit makers, with their new wave style in the video for Stacy's Mom feeling closer to something that you would have seen in a video by the Cars back in the day than the likes of Linkin Park. Even though they came close to another hit with Hey Julie appearing on the soundtrack to Scrubs, Fountains of Wayne have remained one of the more interesting bands that have managed to roll with the punches after the crowds stopped screaming.
