10 Bands That Destroyed Their Careers
3. Guns N Roses
If you weren't there to actually see it happen, it's shocking how much Guns N Roses were a breath of fresh air on the streets of LA. Since most bands were just trying to get by on delivering the same party songs in platform shoes, these guys really felt like a band, with both Slash and Axl Rose getting all of the attention as the true rock stars of the group. But you know who really loved Axl Rose? Axl Rose.
Towards the end of the tour cycle for Use Your Illusion, it was becoming clear that Axl just wanted to use Guns as a means to launch his own artistic vision. I mean, the lush piano ballads on the Illusion records really pale in comparison to the rough street gang that we got to know back on Welcome to the Jungle. By the time they took to the road, Axl even became too good for headliner status, opting to just not show up at all to some of the gigs due to his voice and monitor problems.
When the band was finally able to recoup back home after the tour, no one really thought that they would continue any further, with almost every single band member gradually filing out before Axl replaced them all with session musicians to work on the follow up Chinese Democracy. While we did eventually get that long awaited follow up back in 2008, this is not the Guns N Roses that we knew. Welcome to the Axl Rose Variety Hour!
