10 Bands That Everyone Loves To Hate

8. John Mayer

John Mayer has really had a tremendous journey from being pop rock's posterboy. For as hooky and infectious as some of his earlier material was, Mayer has proven himself to be a modern guitar legend, even nabbing himself a spot jamming with members of the Grateful Dead. On the other hand, it's kind of hard to see the talent when you have the foul aroma of douche.

Pretty much since day one, Mayer has always had a wicked tongue when it comes to discussing his love affairs, which didn't really earn him any favors with the rock faithful.

Aside from his romantic woes, the demeanour that radiates off of Mayer tends to be in line more with frat boy attitudes than the rootsy rock he typically gives us. No matter what situation he finds himself in, Mayer always comes off as that one dude in the college dorm trying to use his guitar to meet girls.

While this particular college frat boy can play circles around most other guitar players, that didn't stop many wannabes from trying to follow in Mayer's footsteps, leading to some of the most milquetoast music of the past decade. Mayer has certainly moved on from his usual sound, but his huge hits back in the day may have created a monster.
